Marriage Enrichment Ministry

This ministry plans and organizes various opportunities which are designed to help strengthen married couples.This ministry offers seminars, correspondences, and retreats to facilitate marriage enrichment and Christian fellowship. Please consider joining them as they diligently seek to reflect Christ through marriages.They offer a Couples’ Sunday School class after 8:30 am service and a number of other activities that seek to help couples sustain godly marriages.

Welcome to Sunday School at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church. We offer a variety of classes on Sunday mornings to all ages (Nursery-Adults). Our "Early" class begins at 7:45 a.m., with two "Sonrise" classes at 8:30 a.m. We offer ten Children and Youth classes and eighteen Adult classes at 10:00 a.m. Our studies include two curriculum, the Standard Sunday School Lesson and the Varied Topical Studies.
Sunday School provides opportunities for Christian service and for spiritual growth in Jesus Christ. We invite you to visit our classes. It is truly our hope that you will find a class just for you.

Young Adult Ministries

This ministry is comprised of young adults ages 18 to 35 who are growing together in their commitment to Jesus Christ.  This ministry is committed to studying, teaching, and spreading the Word of God in our church, community, and city.  Fellowship, outreach commitment, unity, and spiritual growth are the FOCUS of this ministry. If you are a young adult between the ages of 18 to 35, join them in celebrating Christ through the various activities they offer through their ministry.

Singles Ministry

This ministry shares the mission of the church, “to actively use our unique resources and opportunities to love, honor and glorify our Lord and give hope, comfort, instruction and inspiration to all persons that they may become joyful disciples of Jesus Christ,” with Christian singles.  All who love Christ are invited to commit their lives unto him and join with them in their task of proclaiming him as Lord of our lives. They welcome the opportunity to have you join them this year whether it is by sharing in the Sunday morning worship service, Sunday Church School, Wednesday Night Bible Study, or through their planned calendar of events.

Senior Adult Fun Day

The Senior Adult Fun Day is a group of men and women who gather together the last Friday of each month to have fun and fellowship. They meet at 11:00 am. This group participates in various planned activities provided by faithful volunteers.

Sick and Vistation Ministry

This ministry provides encouragement to sick and homebound members. Members of this ministry also visit our nursing homes and homebound members monthly.  They send get well cards, a copy of our church bulletin and other Christian literature to comfort those who are sick and homebound, allowing our members to continue being an active part of the church. The Sick/Visitation Ministry meets the last Tuesday of each month at 6:30 pm in the Board Room.

Grief and Loss Ministry

The aim of this ministry is to minister emotionally, spiritually and socially to fellow Christians within the church family and community who are experiencing a significant loss. Our church volunteers provide care to those in need through phone calls, cards, personal visits, and support groups.

Stephen's Ministry

Stephen's Ministry is our congregation’s one-to-one care-giving ministry.  God works through Stephen Ministers to plant a seed of hope and healing in a person whose life seems barren and forlorn because of a crisis, tragedy or transition in his or her life.The Stephen's Ministry meets the 3rd Tuesday of each month in the Parlor.

Aging Gracefully

This ministry uses its resources to help persons understand the aging process, encourages older adults to enjoy their silver years, and provides education for family caregivers who must deal with problems associated with aging. Aging Gracefully meets the 1st Monday of each month at 6:00 pm.

The Scholarship Committee's mission is to provide financial assistance and encouragement to members as an investment in their educational potential.  Scholarships are currently offered to middle school students preparing to enter high school and to graduating seniors preparing to enter college.

Assimilation Ministry

This ministry serves to welcome new members to the church and provides them with a path for successful assimilation into the church body and the life of Christ. They also provide children, youth, and adult classes for new members. This ministry is responsible for conducting the PLACE workshop that aids them in helping members become a part of the ministries where they might further hone their spiritual gifts.

Wellness Ministry

The wellness ministry conducts blood pressure screenings on Sunday mornings and monitors members’ blood pressure.  They also respond to medical emergencies. The Wellness Ministry meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 5:00 pm in the Boardroom.

His Hands Ministry

The mission of this ministry is to alleviate disparities in health care and health care resources among the underserved populations in the 12 Alabama Black Belt counties by providing medical and Christian ministry.  Volunteers from Sixth Avenue partner with other community organizations and churches to provide culturally sensitive, sustainable medical services, evangelism, discipleship, and ongoing support to Black Belt counties.

Mission Groups

Mission organizations of the church are designed to give members of the church opportunities to pray for, give to, and learn about missions, as they grow spiritually toward a mission lifestyle, and participate in the work of the church and denomination. Ultimately, their goal is for every person to have an  opportunity to hear and respond to the gospel message. The mission groups are                
General Missionary Society - meets the first Monday of each month at 11:00 am.
Northside Matrons - meets on the 2nd Tuesday each month at 6:00pm in the      
Southside Matrons - meets the 1st Tuesday each month at 6:00 pm in the Boardroom.
Sunshine Circle - meets the 2nd Sunday each month after the 11:00 am Worship Service in the Fellowship Hall.       
Women on Mission - meets the 2nd Saturday each month at 1:00pm in the Boardroom.
Circle #1 -meets at 10:00a.m. every 3rd Wednesday in the Boardroom.
Circle #8 - meets on the 3rd Thursday of every month in the Board Room.*
                                *Denotes that these circles do not meet in July and August.

Prison Ministry

The mission of this ministry is to assist the church in its outreach:  to reach offenders, ex-offenders, victims, and their respective families through contact, visitations, guidance, and training. The goal of this ministry is to faithfully lead them to God and invite them into the fold of Christianity with a church family.

Angel Tree

Through the Angel Tree ministry, Sixth Avenue brings the love of Christ year-round to prisoners' kids in the greater Birmingham area. Each year as the names of children are received, members make personal contact with the parent or guardian and provide Christmas gifts.They also invite the children to participate in the church’s annual Easter Egg Hunt,Vacation Bible School and the Back-to-School Rally. Members provide school supplies and extend camping opportunities to the children as well.

Children's Church

The purpose of this ministry is to provide a Christ-centered environment designed to prepare children ages 5 through 11 for congregational worship. Children’s Church meets every 1st & 3rd Sunday immediately following the offertory prayer.

Boy Scouts

Sixth Avenue Baptist Church holds the charter from the Greater Alabama Council of the Boy Scouts of America for two Boy Scout units: Cub Scout Pack #415 for boys ages 6-10 and Boy Scout Troop 415 for boys ages 11-17.  Our purpose is to provide an education program for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness. The Boy Scouts also encourages spiritual growth.

Girl Scouts

Sixth Avenue Baptist Church is the home of Girl Scout Troop #208.They are an affiliate of the Cahaba Council.  The aim of Girl scouting is to promote spiritual service, skill building and leadership.Troop 208 is a multi-level troop for Daisies (K), Brownies (1-3), Juniors (4-7), Cadet's (7-9) and Seniors (10-12).

Nursery Ministry

The church nursery provides infant and toddler care during worship services and Bible study. The nursery is open on Sunday mornings from 8:15 am – 1:00 pm and on Wednesday evenings from 6:20 pm – 7:40 pm.

Tutorial Program

The mission of the tutorial ministry is to lift students academically by lifting Christ first.  In an atmosphere of Godly spiritually, they endeavor to tutor youth and adults from the church and the community-at-large in all subjects.  They also prepare students to score high on the ACT, SAT, Exit and GED exams.

Summer Day Camp

The purpose of the Sixth Avenue Baptist Church Summer Day Camp is to reach out to children ages 5 through 12 and their families by providing a safe, fun, and Christ-centered environment. Daily activities include devotion, spiritual enrichment, reading and math review, computer labs, physical fitness, sports and recreation, field trips, and guest speakers. Swimming is an optional activity.

Members of this ministry are responsible for seating guests and members during worship service, funerals and special events.  They also collect offering.  The usher ministry consists of the following boards:
Isiah Davis Usher Board serves every fourth Sunday.
W. C. Sims Usher Board serves every second Sunday.
Rosa Hardy Usher Board serves every first Sunday.
February, April, June, August, October and December  
Progressive Usher Board serves every third Sunday.
5th Sunday Usher Board serves every fifth Sunday.

Transporation Committee

The Transportation Committee's goal is to help people of all age groups that are unable to get to church on their own. After picking people up at their respective residences, our courteous drivers will gladly provide a safe ride to and from Sixth Avenue Baptist Church.  The Transporatation ministry also provides transportation for ministries and auxiliaries of the church to various workshops and activities.

Music Department

The Music Department at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church feels that the music...whether it is a gospel song, a great masterwork by Bach or Handel,an arrangement of an old hymn of the Church. or an African-American spiritual,  is a blending of musical styles with a commitment to integrity, spirituality, quality, and the vision of the Church Ministry. The music ministry is a vital part of our worship. We offer three different adult choirs (Sanctuary Choir, Progressive Choir, Male Chorus) and the Praise Team, based on musical interest and a desire to worship God through music. All choirs participate in revival and minister with other Churches by invitation. Please come and join us in our music ministry! Sanctuary Choir

 The Sanctuary Choir rehearses on Thursday at 6:30 pm in the Gregory Durr White Music Room. Its repertoire consists of anthems, spirituals, hymn arrangements and gospel music. They provide music for worship on first and third Sundays during the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services. During Easter, Christmas and other special holidays/events of the liturgical year, this choir provides special music for services, under the direction of Minister Wayne Robinson.

Progressive Choir

The Progressive Choir rehearses on Tuesdays at 6:30 pm in the Gregory Durr White Music Room. Its repertoire consists of gospel music, praise songs, and spirituals. They provide music for worship on second and fourth Sundays during the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services. During the fall, this choir presents a concert entitled Harvest Concert, for the benefit of providing scholarships to deserving students. The director is Minister Wayne Robinson.

   The Praise Team is an ensemble of  mixed singers who rehearse on Mondays at 6:30 pm in the Chapel. They provide music for the 7:00 am service. The director is Minister Wayne Robinson.

Children and Youth Music Programs

Our children and youth choirs sing once a month during worship service. The choirs are designed to encourage our children's love of music and increase their understanding of music as a part of our worship to God. All music chosen for the choirs are age-appropriate and scripturally based. Occasionally, they provide additional music for special worship services, minister with other youth groups and/or Churches and sing at nursing homes. They also participate in seasonal services along with the adult choirs.              
    The Children's Choir is for singers ages 4-fifth grade. They provide music during worship on the third Sundays. They rehearse on Wednesdays at 5:15 pm in the Gregory Durr White Music Room. The director is Janice Wilson.
  The Middlers is for singers who are enrolled in middle school. They provide music for worship on first Sundays. They rehearse on Wednesdays at 5:50 pm in the Gregory Durr White Music Room. The director is Janice Wilson.
     The Youth Choir is for high school singers. They provide music for worship on fourth Sundays. They rehearse on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm in the Chapel. The director is Gina Levert.

Audio Visual Ministry

The Audio/Visual Ministry is responsible for the technical aspects of worship at Sixth Avenue Baptist Church.  Members of the A/V ministry run the sound board and provide recorded music for the worship services and special events. They also provide lighting for conferences, concerts and drama presentations held at Sixth Avenue. The A/V ministry makes the audio, video, and digital video recordings of the worship services and special events available to those who would like copies of them. If you have a gift for working with technology and audio visuals, please consider offering your time and services to this ministry.

Male Chorus

The Male Chorus rehearses on selected Mondays at 6:00 pm in the Gregory Durr White Music Room. Its repertoire consists of anthems, spirituals, hymn tunes, and gospel music. They provide music for worship on fifth Sundays during the 8:30 am and 11:00 am services. During the fall, the Male Chorus is presented in concert entitled "Men In Black"  for the benefit of providing scholarships to deserving students. The director is Evelyn Hardy.
