Dr. Joe Scrivner

Joe Scrivner is an ordained minister and a Bible scholar. He moved to Birmingham in 2002, when he accepted a faculty member in the religion department of Samford University. He, his wife Sandra, and his three children joined Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in 2003. He has complemented the ministerial staff here as an occasional preacher and teacher since he joined nearly seven years ago.

Dr. Scrivner co-authored A Handbook to a Grammar of Biblical Hebrew (Abingdon), a supplemental volume to the Hebrew textbook by C. L. Seow. He has also authored brief articles for Teaching the Bible (Eerdmans), The New Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible (Abingdon), The Peoples' Bible (Fortress), and the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (de Gruyter). Dr. Scrivner’s research and teaching interests include Israelite wisdom literature, the role of social location in interpretation, and the relationship between a literary-historical analysis of the Bible and Christian beliefs. He received the B.A. from Crichton College, an M.A. from Reformed Theological Seminary, and the Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary.

Pro Start Academy, an extraordinary academic and athletic program founded and managed by former NFL players, and other professionals are currently offering free scholarships to the youth of Sixth Avenue. This is a one year program with a mission to educate, train, develop and enhance the athletic, academic and life skill abilities of students ages 12–19. This program is a wonderful opportunity and will give our students an unprecedented edge to be considered by colleges for scholarships as well as for internships and future employment opportunities.
